Political Cartoons...

April 30

Please hand in the questions for the Charter of Rights and Freedoms (normally I would just check them, but I ain't here)

If you can maintain order (using "the cue") for a discussion, perhaps students, Ms. RJ  and/or Mr. AS  could lead discussions on 2 or 3 more "Witchins" that are sitting in the red basket at on the shelf at the back. (for about 10 - 15 minutes)... and decide which is the most "political" issue.

Complete the work on the Three Levels of Government. Hand this in by the end of class as well. It's not difficult and you can work together.

If you're finished, try to create a political cartoon about one of our "witchins" so far (Tuesday's witchins: Welfare, Teachers treating you differently if they know about your personal life, how teachers can sometimes be protected from complaints, and, the ineffectiveness of suspensions/expulsions). I will enjoy these (likely) and we can share them Thursday.

WHEN DECIDING WHAT THINGS ARE A "POLITICAL ISSUE" IT IS BEST IF YOU CAN CONNECT THE ISSUE WITH A CHALLENGE TO HUMAN RIGHTS OR FREEDOMS.

AND

OR FIND AND/OR MAKE YOUR OWN ...

Today, as a group:

1) Decide on a topic

2) Go to the internet to understand the complexities of this issue (it's never just about one thing... consider what's happening in the Ukraine)

3) C, D, & E will investigate the complexities around this topic

4) A & B will research this topic in general and decide how they want to represent this topic visually (consider using glogster.com, prezi.com, infogr.com, or any other visual creation technology)

5) C, D, & E share some of the complexities of the issue with A & B so they can incorporate that into the visual (A & B should write this down)

6) C, D, & E should then find an article from a good source that helps explain the issue.  They will use this article when then present within their group by summarizing the article, asking questions to group members, and recording the responses).

TEST  Info:

Test is on.... a) the three levels of government b) the canadian charter of rights and freedoms c) what makes a political issue?  (YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO: * demonstrate that you know what levels of government are responsible for what ...

* know what rights and freedoms people have as a canadian citizen and when these rights and freedoms are violated .... * recognize what is a political issue, who is affected, what levels of government should respond, and what rights and freedoms are being challenged)

Problem: Sahar has been in Afghanistan with her sick aunt for 8 months.  She, herself gets sick and must return home to Canada for treatment.

When she arrives back in Canada and goes to be treated at her local hospital, they deny her services because she can't find her health card.  When

she goes to apply for her new health card, her case is reported to the Federal Department of Citizenship and Immigration who then starts an

investigation into why she was visiting Afghanistan.  They say that her 'free' Health care can not be provided until the investigation is completed.

Q: What levels of government are involved.  According to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, what injustices are taking place.  Why is

this a political issue?
